Great to see Disney putting out more and more music. Do I hope a specialty label will come in and issue these expanded Star Wars scores and The Mandalorian on disc? Yes! But better to have one option, just downloads, then no options. You know what? While I'd still prefer a CD, getting these expanded releases at all is pretty nice. General Discussion: ROGUE ONE - A STAR WARS STORY (Michael Giacchino)

Can you remember a single melody or any other distinguishing feature from Deathly Hallows? Yeah, me neither.FSM Board: ROGUE ONE - A STAR WARS STORY (Michael Giacchino) This score was most certainly a Williams tribute and without question a shitton better than what Desplat would've given us. Giacchino did a bang up job with the time he had, I only can imagine what wonderful things he could've done given more time. Giacchino brought several of Williams' Star Wars themes back, a few times as direct quotes but mostly as paraphrases, where the melody might be there but with altered rhythm or maybe even more abstracted, where the shape and idea are there but not duplicated.

Williams at his height sprouted multiple melodies every bit as memorable for one movie and wove them throughout the score in obvious and subtle ways, a la Wagner and Richard Strauss.

Giacchino is great at tunesmithing one melody that he uses widely during a score, think about the theme to Up or the Enterprise theme from the first new Star Trek. Much of the flute writing in R1 reminded me of Indiana Jones / Holy Grail. Listen also for low(ish) trumpet doubling French horn in many of the exciting moments, a trick Williams learned from Mahler and uses to great effect. To contrast that Richard Strauss via Williams via Giacchino moment, a pure Giacchino moment: when the star destroyers fell into the force field gate, remember that texture, that oddly peaceful, serene sound dominated by quiet strings? Very similar to the elder Kirk piloting his ship headlong into the Romulan mining vessel.

Also like Williams, Giacchino went full Richard Strauss with melody and overall texture during one of the flying scenes, can't remember which offhand.īut flying scenes are something Williams does better than anyone - think about Harry Potter flying Buckbeak in Prisoner of Azkeban, about the Asteroid Field in ESB, the sky bound scenes in Hook - you don't need the visuals to know that we're flying in those and nobody else to my mind comes close. Williams has distinctive flute writing as well. Williams has a certain unmistakable way of using a trumpet section during action scenes (for example) and R1 was chock full of that. What struck me the most was the use of texture and orchestration. To a musician's ear, the vast majority of the soundtrack was Giacchino doing his best Williams impersonation. ||| Join our Discord! ||| Question?
